360 Cameras Turning Heads

The Garmin Virb is a rugged, waterproof 360 action cam that can capture unstitched video in up to 5.7K at 30 fps resolution. Features include 360-degree audio via four mics, built-in GPS, VR compatibility, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and the ability to live-stream content via the accompanying app. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides just over an hour of use, according to the company. It’s currently available at a $799 suggested retail.

Samsung’s Gear 360 can record in 4K resolution and capture 15-megapixel images. Features include 8.4-megapixel sensors and Bright Lens f2.2 on both dual fisheye lenses. Real-time content sharing lets users sync a compatible smartphone or computer with the device to broadcast live video on such platforms as Facebook, YouTube or Samsung VR. It also has built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and a 1,160 mAh lithium-ion battery. Using the accompanied app enables consumers to remotely control the camera, as well as edit and share videos.

Voxx’s 360-LP is a 360-degree body, dash and helmet camera that uses the core technology developed by 360fly, Voxx’s partner in the retail 360-degree camera space. The 360-LP captures stitch-less 360-degree video with interactive and mobile viewing capabilities in 4K resolution. It also boasts a slim, curved design that allows mounting to a body, vehicle or helmet.

Motorola's 360 Camera Moto Mod is a snap-on back topped with a camera that captures 4K 360-degree videos. It’s meant to be used with the company’s new flagship smartphone, the Moto Z2 Force, and features audio via four mics. It can also capture 150-degree field-of-view stills and live stream. Suggested retail is $299.

Monster Digital’s Vision 360 is a virtual-reality action cam with an ultra-wide-angle 360-degree spherical field of view. It can record 1,920 by 960 video at 30 fps, and has a 2x 4-megapixel CMOS sensor. It can also record time-lapse video, and the camera’s 1,500 mAh lithium-ion battery is said to have a one-hour recording capacity. It’s currently shipping with a $379 suggested retail.

While still not officially available at retail, most of the industry waits expectedly to get its hands on GoPro’s newest action cam, the Fusion. The company has launched a pilot program to test the device, which features the ability to record 5.2K resolution and capture VR content. Users can also capture and record traditional video and images. A limited commercial release was scheduled for the end of the year. Pricing is still unavailable.
