Toshiba Adds To Storage Line

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) last week expanded its nascent branded storage product line with the release of a 200GB portable external drive into retail.

The introduction comes about three weeks into Toshiba’s run as a branded retail storage product line, said Maciek Brzeski, Toshiba SDD’s marketing VP. The new drive joins three other models, 100GB, 120GB and 160GB, that are now available at retailers including Micro Center, Amazon, Buy.com, Ritz Camera and Toshibadirect.com.

The company is marketing the storage drives at non-technically savvy digital consumers who may or may not know about the need to back up their notebooks’ content. To better educate these potential customers, the company will focus its advertising and marketing efforts with lifestyle magazines and through a contest dubbed “Toshiba’s Most Prized Digital Memories Sweepstake.” The contest, found at www.digitalmemories.toshibastorage.com, asks consumers to tell about the one memory they would not want to lose via a computer crash. Prizes will include a Toshiba notebook or a gigabeat MP3 player.

The 200GB drive carries a $229 suggested retail. It is based on Toshiba’s 2.5-inch hard-drive technology.
