REDMOND, WASH. — AT&T Wireless said it and Ericsson completed the first live 3G W-CDMA (UMTS) voice call in the United States as part of a testing process.
"AT&T Wireless can and will deliver true 3G services to our customers on schedule, as planned," said Rod Nelson, chief technology officer for AT&T Wireless.
The wideband radio technology delivers data rates up to 2Mbps, enabling simultaneous access to everything from regular voice telephony to a range of content-rich, multimedia services. For example, users will be able to watch a video clip while receiving an e-mail.
SAN DIEGO — Leap Wireless said it became the 10th largest U.S. wireless carrier at the end of 2001 when its subscriber base hit 1,119,000. A year before that, it was 21st.
The company said it's the seventh largest carrier based on potential customers covered by its licenses. The carrier operates in 39 markets in 20 states.
