i-Mate Adds HSDPA, HSPA PDA Phones

Unlocked-GSM supplier i-Mate unveiled a quartet of unlocked touchscreen-equipped PDA phones based on the Windows Mobile 6 OS Windows Mobile at CTIA 2008.

Two of the models in i-Mate’s Ultimate series are W-CDMA high-speed downling packet access (HSDPA) models, and the other two are high-speed packet access (HSPA) models that combine HSDPA with high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA). One includes a hard dialing keypad, another features a hard QWERTY keypad and one features a touchscreen that slides sideways to reveal a QWERTY keyboard in a manner similar to T-Mobile’s Sidekick Slide.

All models operate in GSM/EDGE mode in the 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900MHz bands and in HSDPA or HSPA mode in the 850/1,900MHz bands and foreign 2100MHz band. All also feature Bluetooth, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot, and XGA 1,024 by 768 video output with audio for direct connection to projectors and plasma TVs. Some add GPS. Three adds front-facing VGA camera for video calls.

Here’s what showgoers will find:

The Ultimate 6150 with HSDPA features 2.8-inch touchscreen, 2-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, front-facing VGA camera and FM radio. The 8150 adds hard dialing keypad and smaller 2.6-inch touchscreen. They’ll be available for the U.S. market.

The HSPA models are the 8502 and 9502, for which the company doesn’t yet plan U.S. availability. Both feature integrated GPS. The 8502 features hard QWERTY keyboard and 2-megapixel fixed-focus camera. The 9502 adds 3-megapixel autofocus camera, front-facing VGA camera for video calls, 2.86-inch touchscreen and a touchscreen that slides to one side to reveal a hard QWERTY keyboard. The device can then be rotated to use the screen in landscape mode, with hard keys arrayed horizontally below.

They’ll be available via distributors in early April and direct from i-Mate later in the month. Pricing was unavailable.
