Sony Unveils PS4, Gaming Everywhere Platform

New York — After much speculation, Sony Computer Entertainment launched the PlayStation 4 next-generation gaming console at a gala event in the Hammerstein Ballroom, here, Wednesday night.

Despite the live globally linked event, Sony was surprisingly sketchy on the details for the new system, saying it wasn’t just another console but rather a device that will bring game play out of the living room to wherever the player happens to be.

Las Vegas – TV streaming technology company Media Mall Technologies said Thursday that its PlayOn entertainment media streaming software is now compatible with the Wii U video game console platform.

More than 45 channels of content will now be available via PlayOn on Wii U, including original core services, Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and Amazon VOD.

New key additions include ESPN, ESPN 3, Comedy Central, CNN, Nick, PBS, TLC, Discovery and HBOGo (that latter is available with an HBO cable/satellite TV subscription).

Foster City, Calif. – Sony sold more than 525,000 PlayStation3 consoles in the United States during the week of Black Friday, topping previously reported sales of Nintendo’s new Wii U, but short of the 750,000 units that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold in the period.

Redmond, Wash. — Sales of Nintendo’s new Wii U console surpassed 400,000 units in its week on the market, the company’s U.S. president Reggie Fils-Aime reportedly told CNET in an interview Monday.

At the same time, the company recorded 1.2 million hardware sales in the past seven days, including Black Friday.

The gaming company said it also sold approximately 300,000 Wii units, 250,000 Nintendo's 3DS units and 275,000 DS units.

Foster City, Calif. — Sony released cumulative sales numbers for the PlayStation3 console, showing 70 million units worldwide as of Nov. 4.

The milestone comes less than six years after the platform’s launch in 2006.

Sony is catching up to chief rival Microsoft, which recently announced the same number of sales for the Xbox 360.

Nintendo leads the pack, with sales of an estimated 96 million Wii consoles since 2006.

El Segundo, Calif. — By the end of December, consumers worldwide are expected to snap up 3.5 million Wii U consoles, compared with the 3.1 million Wii consoles that were bought over a similar sales period at the end of 2006, according to new study released by IHS Screen Digest.

Nintendo’s latest gaming console will debut in the U.S. on Nov. 18 and is forecast to outperform the sales of its previous hugely successful Wii platform in its opening months on the market, according to iSuppli.
