Lake Success, N.Y. – Canon USA announced two long-zoom additions to the PowerShot compact point-and-shoot camera lineup that will ship to dealers in September.
The PowerShot SX500 IS ($330 suggested retail) and PowerShot SX160 IS ($230 suggested retail) digital cameras feature optical zoom ranges to 30x and 16x, respectively. Both cameras are equipped with newly enhanced autofocus (AF) technology with greater speed and accuracy over previous SX-series cameras, the company said.

SOLMS, GERMANY – Leica Camera AG introduced Wednesday the V-Lux 3, a compact digital camera with a 4.5-108mm f/2.8-5.2 ASPH 24-fold super-telephoto lens.
The camera’s wide range of focal lengths is said to be equivalent to a 25–600mm lens on a 35mm format camera. It offers a 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor and will record up to 1,920 by 1080/60p HD video.
Pentax introduced a pair of svelte 7-megapixel point-and-shoot digital cameras last week and one entry-level model just prior to International CES.
Both the Optio T30 and M30 will ship in March and are less than an inch thick. They are also compatible with the new SD High Capacity (SDHC) memory card format as well as standard SD cards.
Canon aimed to upset the SLR applecart again with the introduction of a new Digital Rebel, which will join the existing model beneath the $1,000 mark.
The new EOS Digital Rebel XT will be offered in March with a lens for an estimated $999, and without a lens for an estimated $899. It will ship in black or silver. Canon will keep the older Rebel in the line and lower its price to $799.
