Amazon Sells Kindle Through Target

MINNEAPOLIS — Target took the honors of becoming the first third-party retailer to carry Amazon’s Kindle.

The retail chain began selling the ereader on April 25 in its flagship Minneapolis location, 102 south Florida stores, and one store in Issaquah, Wash., said Target spokesman Joshua Thomas.

The Kindle will retail for $259 and will be shown on an interactive display, Thomas told TWICE. “It will be on a tethering system,” he said, “and you will be able to experience the product as you wouldn’t be able to online.”

CUPERTINO, CALIF. — The Wi- Fi + 3G versions of the Apple iPad were expected to go on sale April 30 in Apple stores, Best Buy stores and other outlets, meeting Apple’s previously announced late-April timetable.

Consumers who preordered on Apple’s Web site between March 12 and April 18 were slated to have their models delivered on April 30. Consumers who ordered after those dates were to get their orders shipped by May 7, Apple said.

Outside the U.S., iPads will be available at the end of May.

BELLEVUE, WASH. — T-Mobile launched the first HSPA+ device from a national cellular carrier on March 14, when the WebConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick went on sale for use in the carrier’s single HSPA+ market in Philadelphia.

HSPA+ delivers theoretical wirelessdownload speeds of 21Mbps compared with 7.2Mbps HSPA, which is deployed throughout T-Mobile’s network. The carrier, however, said it’s still “working to put the necessary backhaul in place to support these faster [7.2Mbps HSPA] speeds.”

LAS VEGAS — PCD plans to show its first two cellular-connected netbooks and first cellular-connected mobile Internet device (MID) as part of its plan to expand beyond cellular handsets. All three models, targeted for sale through cellular carriers, feature Wi-Fi and are designed to incorporate either a CDMA 1X EV-DO cellular module or an HSDPA cellular module.

Privately, the company will a show a full-fledged tablet PC without hard keyboard to generate feedback from potential customers.

NEW YORK — AT&T Wireless said it will add Palm- and Dell-branded smartphones to its handset selection, and Verizon Wireless said it has certifi ed two mobile computing devices, a hybrid cellphone/cordless desktop phone, and other devices for use on its 3G network.

At AT&T, the carrier said it plans soon to offer Palm’s WebOS-based Pre Plus and Pixi Plus as well as Dell’s first U.S. smartphone, the Android-based Aero, formerly called the Mini 3.
