Docking Speakers To Diversify At CES

NEW YORK – Dealers going to International CES will find a growing selection of iPad-docking speaker systems, high-end iPod speaker systems, and powered tabletop speaker systems that stream music wirelessly from PCs and mobile devices.

At least one company, iHome, will show a speaker system that streams music via Wi-Fi from iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches, PCs and Macs equipped with Apple’s Air- Play technology. Another company will show a tabletop speaker system that uses Bluetooth to stream audio wirelessly from Bluetooth-connected sources.

STAMFORD, CONN. — Harman International Industries unveiled its first JBL iPaddocking/ charging tabletop speaker, due in March for $149.

The OnBeat loudspeaker docking station, which can be used with any iPad, iPhone or iPod device, enables users to stream Netflix, watch YouTube, and Skype. However, users cannot have Skype or Facetime audio conversations when the iPad is docked, a Harman spokeswoman told TWICE.

“Currently, Apple does not use the dock connector as an option, and there is no microphone on the OnBeat,” she added.

NORTHRIDGE, CALIF. – JBL’s first AirPlayequipped iPod/iPhone-docking speaker system became available last week in the retail and online stores of Best Buy and Apple at a suggested $349, JBL announced.

Using Apple’s AirPlay technology and embedded Wi-Fi, the halo-shaped On Air Wireless Speaker System wirelessly selects and streams unprotected and Apple-protected music directly from a PC’s iTunes library and from the song library stored on an iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone.

NEW YORK — iLuv is gearing up to ship an expanded selection of iPad-docking speaker systems and the industry’s first docking speaker system designed specifically for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab tablets.

iLuv plans late-July shipment of two new iPad-docking systems, shown in mockup form at International CES. They’ll join the iPad-docking iMM747, shipping since November in black, recently available in white, and re-priced to a suggested $99 from $149.

NEW YORK – The docking-speaker market has matured, but suppliers see potential for future growth as the category expands to include “wireless-docking” solutions incorporating stereo Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay, said suppliers polled by TWICE.

They cited a desire by iPhone and iPad owners to keep their devices close at hand while listening to music through a docking speaker, and they pointed to the rise of Android smartphones, which for now stream music to tabletop speakers only through stereo Bluetooth.
