DIAMOND BAR, CALIF. – Premium kitchen appliance manufacturer Dacor has added the company’s new Distinctive dishwasher to its Love You Back Bonus promotion.

The Love You Back Bonus provides customers with free appliances based on certain spend levels. The Distinctive dishwasher will be offered as a free bonus with the purchase of a minimum of $9,000 in Dacor appliances.

Franklin, Mass. – The Boston Group, one of five chapters of the NECO Alliance buying confederation, was planning for a big weekend Aug. 14-15 after Massachusetts authorized a last-minute sales-tax moratorium.

The tax-free-holiday weekend was expected to boost major appliance sales by 10 percent to as much as 30 percent over the prior-year period, when the state failed to offer a tax freeze.

LAS VEGAS — Brand Source held its final fall convention and buy show at the Paris and Bally’s hotels here earlier this month (the venue will move across The Strip to Caesars Palace next year).

Show attendance was up, executives reported, and dealers participated in the largest-ever “Stampede” special-buy event, which now includes appliances and parts, CE, furniture and gift products for bundling.

BENTON HARBOR, MICH. — Whirlpool will visit dealers in 70 cities beginning this month as part of a seven-week training program for sales associates.

The initiative is designed to train dealers’ sales teams on the key selling points of the company’s latest cooking, refrigeration, kitchen-cleanup and laundry innovations.

LOUISVILLE, KY. — A new generation of smart appliances that can save consumers money by communicating with and reacting to the energy grid will help raise price points and restore margin within the majap industry.

That’s the good news.

The bad news, according to Jim Campbell, president/CEO of GE Apliances & Lighting, is that the scenario won’t begin to play out for another one to two years, as the economy continues to dig itself out of the recessionary hole.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Samsung said it is aiming to surpass No. 1 majap maker Whirlpool in global sales by 2013. The company is already closing the gap in refrigeration, where Samsung is in second place behind Whirlpool, appliance VP Hong Chang-Wan said. According to a report in India’s The Economic Times, Hong said Samsung would achieve its goals through “continuous research and technology innovation.”

BENTON HARBOR, MICH. — Whirlpool is recalling about 1.7 million dishwashers that present a possible fire hazard.

The voluntary recall affects more than 30 plastic-tub models manufactured between February 2006 and April 2010 under the Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Peforma by Maytag and Crosley brands.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, electrical failures in the dishwashers’ heating elements have led to 12 reported fires that damaged the units and, in one case, destroyed a kitchen. No injuries have been reported.

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — Retail sales of major appliances were up by the double digits in both dollars and units for the first five months of the year.

According to new data from The NPD Group, majap volume was up 16 percent in dollars and 12 percent in units from January to May 2010, compared with the year-ago period.

Mark Delaney, NPD’s home division director, attributes the spike to a combination of pent-up demand, returning consumer confidence, aggressive promotions and last season’s federally funded majap-rebate program.

WASHINGTON — The springtime spike in factory shipments of major appliances began to wane in May as the federally funded “cash for appliances” rebate programs ran their course.

According to the latest wholesale data compiled by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), total majap unit shipments fell 11 percent in May from the prior month, although they exceeded the year-ago period by 6 percent.
