Louisville, Ky. — GE has begun producing its first U.S.-made front-load laundry pair.

The new ergonomically designed models feature a built-in 7-inch riser and extra-wide door to help reduce strenuous bends and long reaches.

GE invested more than $100 million to upgrade two assembly lines in Building 1 of its massive Appliance Park manufacturing complex here, where traditional top-load washers have been built for 60 years.

Englewood Cliffs, N.J. — LG Electronics USA is rolling out what it describes as the industry’s first top-load steam washer to feature a certified anti-allergen cycle.

LG’s Allergiene steam system, which it debuted in a front-load configuration in 2008, is certified “asthma & allergy friendly” by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).

Louisville, Ky. — GE began production last month of what it describes as the most energy-efficient and feature-laden top-load washer in the company’s history.

The new line, manufactured domestically at GE’s sprawling Appliance Park facility, here, was developed in response to rapid growth within the high-efficiency (HE) top-load category. Indeed, HE top loaders are now the fastest-growing segment of the washer market, a company spokesperson told TWICE, outpacing and even cannibalizing sales of front-load washers, which had enjoyed a decade-long ride.

Wilmington, Del. – A Delaware jury has determined that Asko Appliances and Daewoo Electronics infringed on three front-load washer patents held by LG Electronics.

The case, tried in the U.S. District Court, here, involved patented technology that provides consumers with large-capacity, direct-drive, high-spin-speed washers that produce low noise and vibration, LG said.

LG filed suit against Asko and Daewoo in 2008, alleging that the companies were selling “knock-offs” of patented LG washer designs.

Louisville, Ky. – GE Appliances is voluntarily recalling about 62,000 GE Profile front-load washers after receiving 19 reports of wash tubs separating from the units.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which jointly announced the recall, 10 of the incidents resulted in top panel breakage, although no injuries were reported.

The washers were imported from China and sold at Best Buy, Lowe’s, Sears and The Home Depot from 2008 to 2011 for between $1,200 and $1,600.

LG and Sears are voluntarily recalling about 21,000 dryers which could have faulty gas valves.


Washington – LG Electronics and Sears are voluntarily recalling about 21,000 gas dryers in the wake of 141 reported incidences of overheating.

The Korean-made dryers were sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brands between Nov. 2009 and Aug. 2010, and carried retail prices of between $650 and $1,500. Three LG models and eight Kenmore Elite models are affected.

For the front-load camp comes Kenmore Elite Steam- Care washers in 5- and 5.1-cubic-foot capacities. Available in two control panel styles — Smooth Touch for the smaller model and LCD for the larger — the washers feature a Time Manager option that allows consumers to customize the cycle to the laundry load in order to reduce wash time.

Haier America has introduced a stackable washer and dryer unit that provides apartment and condo dwellers with many of the same features found in full-size laundry products.

At the standard 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep, the HBF1055TVE washer offers a 1,000 rpm spin speed and can be stacked with the HDY6-1 electric dryer to create one unit that can be stacked in a closet or placed separately side by side.
