AMD Expands Vision Brand

NEW YORK— AMD announced a major increase in the number of computers expected to be equipped with AMD processors, and the expansion of its Vision brand into the desktop PC arena.

“This is the largest consumer client launch in AMD’s history,” said Rick Bergman, senior VP/GM of AMD’s products group, during a webcast last week.

He added this is also the first time the company has simultaneously launched products across all its platforms.

Toshiba is planning a broad expansion of its Satellite portable computer offerings with new models being added to all its consumer categories at International CES this week.

In the netbook category Toshiba is introducing the NB305, said Carrie Cowan, Toshiba's product marketing manager for consumer laptops.

The NB305 has Intel's N450 Atom processor, a 10.1-inch LED backlit display, 250GB hard drive and a 3G wireless option.

Netgear bowed two wireless-N routers here at International CES, in the Las Vegas Convention Center's South Hall 4, booth 36270MP.

The wireless-N router with DSL modem — Mobile Broadband edition, model number DGN2200M — is an 802.11n wireless router with dual Internet access options. Users have the option of connecting via its integrated DSL modem or with a high-speed cellular connection that can be established through a 3G, 4G or WiMax USB dongle.

Nvidia introduced a Tegra processor for what company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang called the latest computer category, tablet computers.

Despite the similarity in name between tablet computers and tablet PCs, the Nvidia powered devices are smaller, do not use a Windows platform and can deliver better performance then a netbook. They are intended for consumers who want a better computing experience than can now be delivered by a handheld device like an iPhone or BlackBerry, he said.

Stamford, Conn. - Gartner has again boosted is 2010 worldwide PC shipment forecast, with unit shipments expected to increase almost 20 percent.
Gartner expects 366.1 million units to ship this year, up from the 305.8 million units that shipped in 2009. Spending on PCs will rise 12.2 percent to $245 billion. The research firm's December 2009 prediction anticipated a 13.3 percent shipment increase. NEW YORK — While 3D technology has taken a firm hold in the television category, it has just started to work its way into the PC display segment.

The general consensus among vendors is that 3D will find a strong niche with gamers and will eventually have a positive impact on monitor sales, but that this will not happen for several years.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C. — Lenovo has introduced two notebooks and an all-in-one PC into its consumer line.

The notebooks fall under Lenovo’s G series and will ship next month, while the C315 all-in-one will be available one month later.

The G-series entries consist of the G455 and G555. These have the same feature set, but the G455 has a 14-inch display and the G555 has a slightly larger 15-inch LCD.

FREMONT, CALIF. — Direct-to consumer PC vendor Digital Storm has introduced its Black Ops line of high-performance gaming computers.

The configure-to-order PCs incorporate several Digital Storm features, including its Sub Zero liquid cooling system; the TwisterBoost overclocking process for processors, memory and graphics cards; and a third-party noise suppression package.
