Coby Unveils First Android 4.0 Tablets

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. — Coby Electronics got a jump on International CES by revealing its first tablets based on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Android 4.0 devices are the 7-inch MID7045, 8-inch MID8045, 9-inch MID9045, 9.7-inch MID9745 and 10.1-inch MID1045.

These all feature capacitive touchscreens, 1GHz Arm Cortex A8 processors, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage 802.11b/g/n, an HDMI port, a MicroSD slot, USB 2.0 port, microphone and speaker jack.

All are expected to ship in the first quarter. Pricing has not been announced.

LAS VEGAS — Lenovo is introducing 20 new consumer PC products including tablets and Ultrabooks during International CES, here, this week.

Other additions include all-in-one PCs and traditional desktops. The company will also enter the smart-TV market in late 2012, initially only in China, but possiblyoutside that marketplace at a later date.

LAS VEGAS – With only about seven months in the public eye, and only a small number of models on the market, Ultrabooks have quickly gained a disproportionate amount of fanfare and reinvigorated the laptop category, according to vendors and industry analysts.

These ultra-portable, high-end notebooks performed well during the holiday sales period and vendors expect this trend to continue during the new year, as Intel adds more capability and features to the design.

LAS VEGAS — Hewlett-Packard is bringing an abbreviated list of new products to International CES: a new highpowered desktop and a new all-in-one PC.

The HPE Phoenix h9 desktop is the company’s first attempt at creating a gaming PC-quality desktop that is not targeted specifically at gamers. It is based on HP’s HPE Pavilion that is now on the market, but heavily beefed up in overall capability and power.

LAS VEGAS — Iomega will introduce two network-attached storage (NAS) drives this week as the company continues to shift its focus away from simple external storage systems.

“I see 2012 as the year of network storage,” said Marc Tanguay, Iomega’s senior product manager of network storage solutions.

The primary reason Tanguay cited is the complexity has been taken out of these products for the consumer. The setup is now almost fully automated, removing the need for the consumer to have to behave as an IT manager, he said.

LAS VEGAS — Netgear will introduce three networking products this week, including the Media Storage Router.

The other newcomers is the HD Video and Gaming 4-Port adapter and the Wi-Fi Booster for Mobile.

The WNDR4700 Media Storage Router, shipping in the second quarter with a $329 suggested retail price, features N900 class Wi-Fi range and speed. There is 2TB of internal storage.

NEW YORK – Trend Micro has beefed up its mobile security software line with the release of its Mobile Security Personal Addition title.

The software places additional emphasis on protecting consumers from social-media-based cybercrime along with threats attacking through mobile devices, said Brook Stein, Trend Micro’s senior product manager, consumer segment.

It is now available for $29.99 for a one-year subscription.

EGHAM, U.K. – Worldwide tablet PC sales will tally 63.3 million units in 2011, with Apple owning 73.4 percent of the market, according to a Gartner report.

The 63.3 million units represent a 261 percent increase over 2010 sales, and the growth rate will continue to climb at least through 2015 when 326.3 million units are sold.

NEW YORK — Digital camera makers Canon, Nikon and Sony have all reported damage to either their facilities or to component factories in Thailand, which will slow production.

Nikon said it was still trying to estimate the potential damage caused by recent flooding to its Nikon (Thailand) Co. Ltd. manufacturing operations, but added that there had been no casualties to any of the company’s employees.

New York - As the monsoon-induced floodwaters begin to recede in Thailand, PC and CE manufacturers are trying to determine the impact the hard-disk-drive (HDD) production halts will have on the their industries in the coming months.

Already HDD shortages, up to 30 percent, have appeared, along with massive price hikes, partially caused by price gouging by HDD distributors and brokers, said one Netgear executive.
