Once the Lightning-equipped iPhone is plugged into the head unit, the CarPlay user interface automatically launches, the company said.</p> <p>Four of the head units are navigation/multimedia receivers, and the lowest price model is a multimedia receiver.</p> <p>None of the company&rsquo;s other current head units are upgradable to add CarPlay, Cardenas noted. He declined to say when Pioneer would offer new head units equipped with CarPlay.</p> <p>Pioneer added CarPlay to heads already equipped with AppRadio Mode, Cardenas said, because &ldquo;there are distinct differences between AppRadio Mode and CarPlay.&rdquo; Depending on how they connect their Apple 5, 5c or 5s iPhone to the head units, consumers will be able to choose one feature set or the other, he said.</p> <p>CarPlay delivers &ldquo;a better [user] experience than any available so far,&rdquo; focuses on controlling four core iPhone functions (voice calls, messaging, stored and streamed music, and Apple maps), and integrates the four core functions, Cardenas said.</p> <p>In citing one example of core-function integration, Cardenas pointed out that if an incoming text message includes an address, then the address will appear automatically in the dashboard display of Apple&rsquo;s Maps app for quick selection.</p> <p>CarPlay also enables Siri voice control of the four core functions, though control is also available through the heads&rsquo; touchscreens and hard buttons. Also with CarPlay, Siri reads back text messages and lets drivers dictate responses.</p> <p>In comparison, AppRadio Mode enables control of a greater variety of apps, all of which are AppRadio-enabled, though the apps don&rsquo;t work together in an integrated manner.</p> <p>In AppRadio Mode, the heads also do not deliver Siri control of AppRadio-enabled apps, and Siri is limited to control of hands-free calling and controlling any function that Siri does in stand-alone mode, such as asking for sports scores or directions to a destination. The destination, however, won&rsquo;t appear automatically appear on an onscreen map.</p> <p>One of the biggest differences between AppRadio Mode and CarPlay is that AppRadio Mode enables control of AppRadio apps on select Android phones, not just on Apple phones.</p> <p>&ldquo;CarPlay is a 100 percent Apple interface that [unlike AppRadio Mode] requires no additional apps to download or update. It controls core Apple functions, and cabling is simpler,&rdquo; Cardenas added.</p> <p>To enable CarPlay features, compatible iPhones connect to CarPlay heads via a Lightning-to-USB cable that comes with an iPhone. iPhones connected to access AppRadio functionality in four of the NEX heads, on the other hand, require a $50 HDMI connection kit from Pioneer, Apple&rsquo;s $49 Lightning-to-digital A/V connector, and the standard Lightning-to-USB cable.</p> <p>CarPlay was developed by Apple mainly for use by automakers, and, so far, automakers have announced that CarPlay would be available this calendar year in only a handful of vehicles: the Ferrari FF, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Volvo&rsquo;s XC90 SUV. Apple, however, has also claimed that many other auto manufacturers are working with it to develop CarPlay-enabled systems.</p> <p>CarPlay also lets users control iTunes Radio, Spotify and iHeartRadio, and Apple has promised CarPlay will support more streaming apps in the future.</p> <div class='sharethis-buttons'><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-carplay-appradio-perfect-together/110604" st_title="Pioneer: CarPlay &amp; AppRadio Perfect Together" class="st_twitter_hcount" displaytext="Tweet"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-carplay-appradio-perfect-together/110604" st_title="Pioneer: CarPlay &amp; AppRadio Perfect Together" class="st_sharethis_hcount" displaytext="ShareThis"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-carplay-appradio-perfect-together/110604" st_title="Pioneer: CarPlay &amp; AppRadio Perfect Together" class="st_fblike_hcount" displaytext="Facebook Like"></span></div><div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-post-date"> <div class="field-label">Post Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Apr 16 2014 - 9:22am</span> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 16 Apr 2014 13:24:40 +0000 ljohnston 110604 at http://www.twice.com Alpine Plans Aftermarket CarPlay In Fall http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/alpine-plans-aftermarket-carplay-fall/110600 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-head-text"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Iwaki, Japan — Alpine announced plans to offer CarPlay-equipped aftermarket head units in the fall in the U.S. and Europe. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-article-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_article_image" width="1721" height="1444" alt="An artist’s rendering of an Alpine head unit equipped with Apple CarPlay." src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/AlpineCarPlay.jpg?1397593110" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-image-caption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An artist’s rendering of an Alpine head unit equipped with Apple CarPlay. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-upload-image"> <div class="field-label">Upload Video Image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_upload_image" alt="" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/imagefield_default_images/256640-Bluray.jpg?1343954366" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Iwaki, Japan &mdash; Alpine announced plans to offer CarPlay-equipped aftermarket head units in the fall in the U.S. and Europe.</p> <p>Model numbers and pricing will be announced at the time of launch.</p> <p>Motorists will be able to control CarPlay functions on a cable-connected iPhone 5, 5s or 5c running iOS 7 from a large, in-dash touchscreen. The burial will immediately follow at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.</p> <p>Korn founded Central Television Services out of his garage with his partner in 1948. This became B&amp;K Electronics, which in turn joined forces with other small CE companies to form Dynascan. In 1963, Dynascan engineers developed the world&#39;s first CB radio, the Sidewinder, which was shortly followed by the Cobra, according to Bazet&rsquo;s statement. The Cobra name soon became the symbol and brand name for this signature product.</p> <p>Korn served as president and CEO from 1961 to 1985 and was chairman of the board from 1961 to 2008, when he officially retired. He remained chairman emeritus until his death.</p> <div class='sharethis-buttons'><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-founder-carl-korn-dies-92/110575" st_title="Cobra Founder Carl Korn Dies, 92" class="st_twitter_hcount" displaytext="Tweet"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-founder-carl-korn-dies-92/110575" st_title="Cobra Founder Carl Korn Dies, 92" class="st_sharethis_hcount" displaytext="ShareThis"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-founder-carl-korn-dies-92/110575" st_title="Cobra Founder Carl Korn Dies, 92" class="st_fblike_hcount" displaytext="Facebook Like"></span></div><div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-post-date"> <div class="field-label">Post Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Apr 11 2014 - 3:31pm</span> </div> </div> </div> Fri, 11 Apr 2014 19:32:05 +0000 ljohnston 110575 at http://www.twice.com Cobra Expands Dash Cam Lineup http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-expands-dash-cam-lineup/110566 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-head-text"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> By Joseph Palenchar Chicago — Cobra will expand its selection of dash cams in May with the shipment of a trio of models priced from a suggested $119 to $249. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-article-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_article_image" width="2770" height="2929" alt="Cobra CDR900 dash cam " src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/CobraCDR900.jpg?1397219020" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-image-caption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Cobra’s $249-suggested CDR900 dash cam features 1080p video capture, G-Sensor to automatically save a video when an impact has been detected, and GPS to embed location information in videos. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-upload-image"> <div class="field-label">Upload Video Image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_upload_image" alt="" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/imagefield_default_images/256640-Bluray.jpg?1343954366" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Chicago &mdash; Cobra will expand its selection of dash cams in May with the shipment of a trio of models priced from a suggested $119 to $249.</p> <p>The company launched its first two models last year at a suggested $99 and $149.</p> <p>The new models record in 1080p and feature G-Sensor to automatically save a video when an impact has been detected. A motion sensor triggers video recording when motion is detected.</p> <p>The mid model adds GPS to embed location and time data in recordings, and the top model adds Wi-Fi to communicate with an iOS or Android app running on a mobile device.</p> <p>The new selection starts with the $119 CDR-820 with 1.5-inch LCD screen, ability to play back video on a TV, 118-degree viewing angle and an 8GB MicroSD card.</p> <p>The $169 CDR840, also with a 1.5-inch screen, adds internal GPS to embed location and time information in videos, and free PC software, which lets users view video along with location and G-Sensor information on a PC. It also adds a MiniHDMI output to send video to a TV or PC. Other features include 118-degree viewing angle and 8GB MicroSD card.</p> <p>At $249, the CDR900 steps up the screen size to 2 inches; widens the viewing angle to 160 degrees; and adds an Ambarella A7LA chipset for improved image quality, night-time image capture and better dynamic range. It also adds Wi-Fi to communicate with iOS and Android devices for viewing and sharing videos. Other features include MicroHDMI output and an 8GB MicroSD card. It lacks GPS and PC software, a spokesperson said.</p> <div class='sharethis-buttons'><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-expands-dash-cam-lineup/110566" st_title="Cobra Expands Dash Cam Lineup" class="st_twitter_hcount" displaytext="Tweet"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-expands-dash-cam-lineup/110566" st_title="Cobra Expands Dash Cam Lineup" class="st_sharethis_hcount" displaytext="ShareThis"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/cobra-expands-dash-cam-lineup/110566" st_title="Cobra Expands Dash Cam Lineup" class="st_fblike_hcount" displaytext="Facebook Like"></span></div><div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-post-date"> <div class="field-label">Post Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Apr 11 2014 - 8:22am</span> </div> </div> </div> Fri, 11 Apr 2014 12:25:13 +0000 John Laposky 110566 at http://www.twice.com Spring Break Expo Eyes Greater Trade-Show Focus http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/spring-break-expo-eyes-greater-trade-show-focus/110538 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-head-text"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Daytona Beach, Fla. – SBN Expo Group has scheduled its 29th annual Spring Break Expo for March 20-24, 2015, and promised to turn it into more of a trade show, though consumers will still be invited. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-article-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_article_image" width="352" height="179" alt="" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/SpringBreakNationals.JPG?1396989396" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-upload-image"> <div class="field-label">Upload Video Image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_upload_image" alt="" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/imagefield_default_images/256640-Bluray.jpg?1343954366" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Daytona Beach, Fla. &ndash; SBN Expo Group has scheduled its 29th annual <a href="http://www.springbreaknationals.com/">Spring Break Expo</a> for March 20-24, 2015, and promised to turn it into more of a trade show, though consumers will still be invited.</p> <p>SBN is &quot;moving to make it more of an industry trade show,&rdquo; said SBN founder, autosound retailer and IASCA president Paul Papadeas.</p> <p>SBN is making the move &ldquo;along with the support of industry proponents [and] those who get it,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo; We will not dismiss consumers, but we are investigating the right formula based on our long-term experiences.&rdquo;</p> <p>The show has already begun to move in that direction, with distributor Audio America offering show specials to dealers at this year&rsquo;s event. In addition, distributor Dow Electronics held training sessions for dealers and prospective dealers. Dow represents Sony, Kenwood and Arc Audio.</p> <p>&nbsp;&ldquo; We see Spring Break Nationals becoming more and more dealer &ndash;focused, and Dow is proud to be part of that metamorphosis,&rdquo; said Dow sales VP Dave Elkin. &ldquo; Our intent is to help grow dealer attendance by providing valuable training and bringing our key vendors to SBN. Dealers are looking for opportunities to learn more and earn more.&rdquo;</p> <p>At last month&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/sbn-wraps-28th-spring-break-expo/110404">28th annual Expo</a>, more than 61 car electronics brands were represented by manufacturers, distributors and dealers. Thousands of spectators and hundreds of dealers attended the event, which included sound-off competitions organized by the IASCA Worldwide, dB Drag Racing and MECA organizations, said Papadeas.</p> <div class='sharethis-buttons'><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/spring-break-expo-eyes-greater-trade-show-focus/110538" st_title="Spring Break Expo Eyes Greater Trade-Show Focus" class="st_twitter_hcount" displaytext="Tweet"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/spring-break-expo-eyes-greater-trade-show-focus/110538" st_title="Spring Break Expo Eyes Greater Trade-Show Focus" class="st_sharethis_hcount" displaytext="ShareThis"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/spring-break-expo-eyes-greater-trade-show-focus/110538" st_title="Spring Break Expo Eyes Greater Trade-Show Focus" class="st_fblike_hcount" displaytext="Facebook Like"></span></div><div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-post-date"> <div class="field-label">Post Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Apr 8 2014 - 4:35pm</span> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 08 Apr 2014 20:36:59 +0000 ljohnston 110538 at http://www.twice.com Pioneer Promotes Thin Car Subwoofers For Deep Sound http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-promotes-thin-car-subwoofers-deep-sound/110536 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-head-text"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Long Beach, Calif. – Pioneer launched its next generation of shallow-mount in-vehicle subwoofers, which are designed for limited-depth applications and small enclosures. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-article-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_article_image" width="1200" height="1361" alt="The $180-suggested 12-inch TS-W3002S4 is one of three shallow-mount in-car subwo" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/Pioneer%20TS-SW3002S4.jpg?1396984850" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-image-caption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The $180-suggested 12-inch TS-W3002S4 is one of three shallow-mount in-car subwoofers launched by Pioneer. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-upload-image"> <div class="field-label">Upload Video Image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_upload_image" alt="" src="http://www.twice.com/sites/default/files/imagefield_default_images/256640-Bluray.jpg?1343954366" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Long Beach, Calif. &ndash; Pioneer launched its next generation of shallow-mount in-vehicle subwoofers, which are designed for limited-depth applications and small enclosures.</p> <p>The three new models in the ib-Flat series deliver more output, higher power handling, higher sensitivity, and more installation flexibility than their predecessors, the company said.</p> <p>The products, which are shipping, are the $180-suggested 12-inch TS-W3002S4, $160 10-inch TS-SW2502S4 and $140 8-inch TS-SW2002D2.</p> <p>The subs feature a mounting depth of less than 3.25 inches and require only a small enclosure to reach optimum performance, Pioneer said.</p> <p>For use specifically with the subs, Pioneer developed four unloaded sealed enclosures in traditional and truck-style designs, plus a single preloaded enclosure incorporating the 10-inch driver.</p> <p>The unloaded enclosures range in internal air volume from 0.15 cubic feet to 0.5 cubic feet. The unloaded enclosures are available at suggested retails from $60 to $100, and the loaded enclosure is $200.</p> <p>The subs feature convex cone made with mica-reinforced injection-molded polypropylene (IMPP) resin to create a stiff, durable cone with reduced mass, the company said. A dual-spider suspension delivers increased linearity of voice-coil and cone movement to boost sound quality, power handling and reliability, the company continued. A four-layer, heat-resistant polyester resin voice coil helps dissipate heat quickly, also boosting power handling.</p> <p>The 8-inch subwoofer uses an outer basket stamped with a variety of mounting holes so it can be used as a drop-in OEM-replacement speaker in select vehicles.</p> <div class='sharethis-buttons'><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-promotes-thin-car-subwoofers-deep-sound/110536" st_title="Pioneer Promotes Thin Car Subwoofers For Deep Sound" class="st_twitter_hcount" displaytext="Tweet"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-promotes-thin-car-subwoofers-deep-sound/110536" st_title="Pioneer Promotes Thin Car Subwoofers For Deep Sound" class="st_sharethis_hcount" displaytext="ShareThis"></span><span st_url="http://www.twice.com/articletype/news/pioneer-promotes-thin-car-subwoofers-deep-sound/110536" st_title="Pioneer Promotes Thin Car Subwoofers For Deep Sound" class="st_fblike_hcount" displaytext="Facebook Like"></span></div><div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-post-date"> <div class="field-label">Post Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Apr 8 2014 - 3:20pm</span> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 08 Apr 2014 19:21:28 +0000 ljohnston 110536 at http://www.twice.com
