ARLINGTON, VA. — Factory-level dollar sales of aftermarket autosound and mobile video will decline at more modest rates during the next few years than they did during the Great Recession year of 2009, and fixed (installed) navigation systems will post slight growth through 2012 after a dramatic 2009 fall-off, CEA forecasts show.
Within the autosound segment, three subcategories will post modest gains through 2013: head units with built-in Bluetooth, head units with built-in HD Radio, and “mech-less” head units that lack CD mechanism but feature USB ports or memory-card slots. The three categories combined, however, will account for only $94 million in 2010 autosound sales of $1.16 billion, excluding Bluetooth headsets, CEA forecasts show.
Also within the autosound segment, dollar sales of transportable and installed satellite radio will decline each year through 2013, but sales of OEM integration products will rise in 2010 and 2011 before flattening in 2012 and 2013, CEA said.
All told, autosound sales (excluding Bluetooth headsets) will drop 8.3 percent in 2010 to $1.16 billion following an estimated 16.9 percent drop in 2009, with declines in 2011- 2013 ranging from 6.9 percent to 7.9 percent.
In mobile video, estimated 2009 volume fell 38.9 percent to $229 million, but between 2010 and 2013, annual volume will fall each year only by 12.7 percent to 15 percent, depending on the year. The market will close out 2013 at a forecast $125 million.
In installed navigation, excluding portable navigation devices (PNDs), sales fell an estimated 19 percent in 2009 to $133 million but will rise 4 percent in 2010 to $138 million, 2 percent in 2011 and 2012, and 1 percent in 2013.
PND sales fell 58 percent in 2008 to $1.56 billion but will fall at a slower 16 percent in 2010 and 11 percent to 12 percent in each of the following years through 2013.
Combined sales of autosound, mobile video, and installed navigation (excluding Bluetooth headsets and PNDs) drop only 8 percent in 2010 to $1.5 billion following 2009’s estimated 21 percent decline to $1.63 billion. Sales will continue to fall at high single-digit rate through 21013, when CEA forecasts a $1.19 billion market.
