E-tailers Look For The Green This Monday

E-tailers are mounting their third major promotional barrage of the season today in an effort to squeeze any remaining sales from shopping-weary consumers.

So-called “Green Monday” falls on the second Monday in December, and was given form by eBay five years ago to mark its busiest sales day of the month.

It has since become the third-busiest day for e-tail following Cyber Monday – a creation of the National Retail Foundation’s Shop.Org division – and Black Friday, whose derivation has been traced to the Philadelphia police department.

According to Shop.org, Mondays in December are among the strongest of all online shopping days, making Green Monday a fixture on e-tail calendars. Indeed, seven out of ten retailers plan to employ email marketing, home-page messaging, search, and social media to lure customers back with free shipping and site-wide percent-off coupons, the trade association said.

Green Monday also has the added urgency of impending ship-date cutoffs for regular-rate deliveries before Christmas.

Today’s CE discounts include 50 percent off a 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablet at Amazon.com; a $50 gift card with the purchase of select Apple tablets at Target; 12 percent off orders of $299 or more at hhgregg.com; and up to 25 percent off a raft of tech goodies at BestBuy.com.

Between that, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we may need to declare tomorrow Overdraft Tuesday.
