The day of the earthquake generated in Mineral, Va. the weather in New York was gorgeous, especially for an August day – crystal clear skies, low humidity, the high around 80 degrees. The same thing happened in the days following Hurricane Irene – warm sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
Since 2001 whenever I experience days with weather like that around this time of year I remember a day I don’t want to recall and will never forget – September 11 of that year.
The weather was just like that ten years ago. Perfect. It was juxtaposed by the horror and tragedies that transpired on that fateful day. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 that is just one of my memories.
As many TWICE readers recall our old offices on West 17th Street faced downtown towards the World Trade Center. None of the TWICE staff at that time thankfully did not lose a friend or relative in the attack, but as the ‘Terror Outside Our Window,’ as the column in our September 17, 2001 issue which described what we saw, this anniversary is personal to us.

It seems like yesterday, yet ten years have passed by. A lot has been written and said about what we should and shouldn’t have done but as we approach this somber anniversary it is not the time for such discussions.
What I would like to suggest is that on Sunday, September 11, 2011 we should pause and take a moment to remember all those who died and were injured that day – and all those who died and injured in the many battles and terrorist attacks across the globe since that day – and hope and pray for the day that violence will no longer be the way for human beings to settle their differences.
