Quake Impact May Have Missed Flat-Panel Supplies

Austin, Texas – DisplaySearch Greater China market VP David Hsieh has released a blog on the DisplaySearch website assessing the possible disruption that the March 11 earthquake in Japan may or may not have on supplies of global flat-panel TV displays this year, especially LCD panels.

The good news, if you can call it that, is the worst of the quake damage outside of Japan may ultimately be more psychological than physical, as most panel production facilities in Japan lie outside the impacted area.

“Along with concern about oil prices, the earthquake in Japan might further psychologically influence consumers and businesses, though in a subtle manner,” Hsieh wrote.

Some flat-panel-display components suppliers may have been impacted, he stated, but most parts markers keep safety stocks that should cover any temporary shortfalls.

For a detailed run down of panel and component suppliers tied to Japanese production, the rest of the blog can be found here.
