Crowdfunding Spotlight

NEW YORK — Crowdfunding, once viewed as a novel way for start-ups to raise backing for dubious projects, is now a widely accepted method of securing funding. Not only are unheard-of companies taking to sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Quirky to secure capital, but established manufacturers are also testing the waters for new products by judging the response they receive from consumers. What follows is a sampling of some of the most recent products to launch or complete crowdfunding campaigns.

Nude Audio’s portable Bluetooth speaker had destroyed its $75,000 Kickstarter goal at press time, reaching $769,690 with a half-day to go. The waterproof and sand-proof Super-M speaker features four full-range drivers and two passive radiators, meant to provide 360-degree sound. It boasts an eight-hour battery life, measures 5.75 inches by 1.1 inch by 3 inches, and carries a $99.99 price tag.

The Ritot projection watch can display notifications and alerts on the user’s skin. Notifications, which include caller ID, emails, Facebook messages and weather alerts, among others, can be dismissed by shaking the wrist. A variety of colors will be offered for the device, which carries a $120 price on Indiegogo.

The Power Annex portable battery from Kero on Kickstarter measures just 0.35 inches high and features the company’s Microsuction technology, allowing it to adhere to a smartphone or tablet. It will be available in December for $29.99.
