A DIY Solution To Home Radon Testing

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, radiation-filled gas that can seep into buildings from the surrounding soil through foundation cracks and openings and even directly through concrete. Exposure to radon in homes causes an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year in the U.S. It is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that one in 15 American homes may have elevated levels of radon.

The purpose of the EPA’s National Radon Action Week is to educate people about the health risks of radon and to inform everyone how to test their homes for radon and what actions need to be taken if there are high levels of radon present.

Until now, radon testing was done either by a professional service or by less accurate home testing kits that had to be mailed away to be analyzed.

Today, RSens, a developer of products for the professional radon-detection services market, is introducing the Aria radon monitor for home use. The Aria sits on a shelf and delivers immediate data and ongoing monitoring of the levels of radon and indoor pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds, to a mobile app which displays detailed graphical reports and sends alerts.

It also features LED lights that provide immediate visual cues for safe or unsafe air quality levels. It can be integrated as part of a smart home, such as being connected with a Nest thermostat or other home ventilation systems. Aria will notify the ventilation systems, and they will automatically turn on if the air-quality threshold falls below a certain level.

“Aria is as easy to use as a smoke detector and very accurate, so we are now potentially preventing thousands from getting lung cancer because of radon exposure. This deadly gas kills over six times more people than fire or carbon monoxide every year,” said Luca Bidinelli, CEO of RSens. “Aria uses proven technology and makes consumer home testing possible. If you had the chance to find out immediately whether your family was living in a radon-filled environment, wouldn’t you take it so that you could address the problem?”

Aria is launching today on Indiegogo to crowd-fund the final manufacturing costs. Donors who assist in funding or who pre-purchase the unit will receive various Aria perks. Units will be available for sale and distribution commercially in late 2015 and will cost approximately $249.
