Black Friday Is Still Just Friday At P.C. Richard

November 23, 2011

With all the talk about Thanksgiving store openings to get a jump on Black Friday, one major electronics/appliance chain has, as expected, not changed its strategy: P.C. Richard & Son.

Black Friday for P.C. Richard & Son will be … Black Friday.

It will remain closed on Thanksgiving and open on Friday, according to its now-annual full-page ads in the New York Daily News and Newsday in this morning’s papers and on its website.

In part the ad reads, as it has in past years, “Retailers who choose to open on Thanksgiving Day show no respect to their employees and families, and are in total disrespect of family values in the United States of America.”

Sales results will show whether or not those retailers that opened on Thanksgiving actually got a competitive advantage over a retailer like P.C. Richard.

Here’s what I want for Christmas: a telephone answering machine having the following features. First, it supports caller ID. Second, for calls from a programmable list of telephone numbers, the machine will: (1) answer the call automatically without ringing; (2) transmit three 440 Hz tones, each of one second duration, separated by (two) one-second silent periods; (3) hang up.

If this protocol became a de facto standard,

automatic callers would soon be programmed to recognize it in order to stop wasting the caller’s money and time by repeatedly calling the answering machine at that number.
