Stuff Turkeys, Not Shopping Bags On Thanksgiving: Survey
Most people would prefer that these companies let their employees spend the day stuffing turkeys instead of shopping bags, according to a survey by ConsumerSearch.com.
So this survey indicates consumers strongly agree with the sentiments in a blog I wrote last week, “Black Thanksgiving,” that being open on the holiday is a lousy idea.
In a survey released today by ConsumerSearch.com, part of the About Group, an overwhelming majority (87 percent) of consumers believe all retailers should remain closed on Thanksgiving Day. Sixty-one percent think more highly of retailers who give store employees the day off to spend with their families, while 26 percent would rather spend time with friends, family or doing something other than shopping. The survey was done in November with 1,003 consumers responding.
We will find out before the holiday weekend is over whether consumers will trudge out to stores the evening of Thanksgiving Day for sales.

I wonder how many of those shoppers who think that retailers should remain closed on Thanksgiving Day go shopping on Thanksgiving Day?
Also, especially in the poor economy, I'm not convinced that the employees would rather be home.
One could make the same argument about Sundays. When I was a kid, no large retailer was open on Sundays.
The fact is that if you don't want to shop on Thanksgiving or Sundays, don't. For me personally, I barely venture into a retail store between Thanksgiving and January 15th. I buy products when I need or want them, not because there happens to be a holiday coming. But if everyone were like me, the economy would probably collapse even more than it already has. The unfortunate fact is that capitalism only works when the vast majority of consumers buy tons of crap they don't need. So much crap that renting storage lockers has become a $22bn business to fit the junk we can't fit at home in spite of the fact that we're a throw-away society.

Did anybody ever take a survey on the amount of traffic accidents shoppers have? The trickery (unneeded stress) that the retailers do to make customers leap through hoops to save a few dollars. Hey shoppers! You’ve gotta about 350 days to shop. For Christ Sake (REALLY CHRIST) use the holidays to spend time with your loved ones.
