Whoo, Whoo Woot!

August 17, 2011

Best Buy is the latest addition to the growing cadre of deal-of-the-day e-commerce offerings, which now includes social promotion sites Groupon and Living Social.

Best Buy’s entry, which launched Aug. 1 at www.bestbuy.com/dealoftheday.com, offers a different discounted CE product each weekday.

While we welcome the newcomers, we also offer a tip of the hat to Matt Rutledge’s Woot.com, which pioneered the business model seven years ago in CE. The distributor later expanded the offer to myriad product categories, both before and after being acquired by Amazon.com last year.

Though the concept has been widely copied, no one has done so with the same wit, irreverence and aplomb that helped popularize the category and made Woot a daily must read, whether you were purchasing their “Bag of Crap” or not.

My wife has moved from QVC shopping to Kohls shopping because evey week she receives a flyer with a "scratch off" discount of between 10% and 50%. Great excitement. If there is no difference in product or price it must be the experience.
