Clean Up Your Room, Slave

July 19, 2010

One never wants to diminish the seriousness or urgency of a missing child.

But …

Mirage Square has introduced another child-tracking device, this one with some unfortunate naming conventions. The Kid Tracker consists of two units: the Master unit for the parent and the Slave unit for the child.

Master and Slave? As the parent of an often-disrespectful preschooler, I’m all for parental boundaries, but this goes a bit far.

The Kid Tracker uses RF technology that will emit an alarm when a child goes 30 meters away from the parent (excuse me, the Master). Thankfully, this leaves enough room for the Slave to run to first base during little league games, but just hope they don’t hit any doubles.

How about calling the units by the radical names of "Parent" and "Child"?

Hi 39 Cent – thanks for your comment. I’m aware of the terminology; however, there’s no reason the company couldn’t have picked more consumer-friendly terms for the devices. Companies do it all the time.

Master and Slave have been used with technology for years. It has nothing to do with the owning of another person or some twisted incest bondage. Master doesn't describe momma.. it describes the primary unit. Slave doesn't describe gimp boy.. its the secondary unit.
