OK, Everybody Say’Cheese’ For 53 Minutes

October 30, 2009

If you were one of the 50,000 or so fans at Game 1 of the World Series on Sunday in The Bronx, or knew someone who was, get ready for the best game of “Where’s Waldo?” you ever played.

MLB.com had photographer David Bergman produce this panoramic image from the game by stitching together 675 photos (45 across by 15 down) taken over a 53-minute span starting at 8:02 p.m. ET. Bergman’s camera was mounted on a GigaPan Epic robotic camera mount and processed using GigaPan Stitcher software.

The progression of individual photos start in the top left and proceeds top-to-bottom and then left-to-right. The final hi-res file is 104,360 by 27,836 pixels or 2,904 megapixels. The uncompressed image is more than 8GB.

To navigate the GigaPan panoramic image, use the tool on the left side of the frame to zoom in and out on anyone in the crowd or on the field (the photo will refocus automatically).

Bergman in January produced a similar GigaPan photo of the inauguration of President Barack Obama that has garnered more than 11 million hits to the photographer’s blog.

Even if you weren’t at the game, you can spend some time hunting for notables such as Alec Baldwin, Rudy Giuliani, Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson and James Gandolfini (hint: all in the good seats) as well as yours truly (um, section 426, row 13, second last row of the stadium).

For the record, Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee shut down the Yankees, 6-1, and this upper-deck denizen went home happy.
