Best Buy Picks NYC For Its First 24-Hour Store

October 15, 2009

New York is the city that never sleeps, so it is entirely appropriate that Best Buy chose the Big Apple for its first 24-hour location.

The ’round-the-clock retail store — the company’s fifth outpost in Manhattan — will occupy a former flagship Circuit City site on heavily trafficked 14th Street at Union Square.

When it opens on Nov. 13, the 48,000-square-foot store will stay open each week from 8:00 a.m. on Monday through midnight on Saturday. Sunday hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The convenience-store hours were meant to accommodate students at downtown universities and New Yorkers with “hectic lifestyles that don’t always conform to traditional retail hours,” CEO Brian Dunn said in a statement.

The store will also provide around-the-clock service from Geek Squad and in-store pickup of online purchases, and will boast the largest Best Buy musical instruments department in the United States, including lighting equipment and professional DJ equipment.

In response to a question by TWICE editor in chief Steve Smith during a Best Buy presentation last month, Dunn said he was very excited about the Union Square location, which was still under construction — but wished someone would take down the Circuit City sign.

In response to Aaron M, they will want to work there because it’s more fun than stocking the shelves at Trader Joes and a better work experience. There’s not that many job choices for students where the hours would be as flexible.

Finally, a place for kids to go after the bars close. lt’ll smell like booze and puke they’ll have to hire additional security. BB will change the hours after the holidays but for now, party on!!!

Quick learners and into the products? Then why would they want to work for BB? Certainly does not match with what happens down here. But maybe they manage things differently up there. We’ll see, I guess.

My daughter is a student at NYU and she and her friends are thrilled about the new Best Buy. This is one of the few areas a 24-hour CE store would work.

Like the local Trader Joes (The only one of which in Manhattan happens to be on the same block), they will have a bottomless pool of NYU (among others) students to choose from. These kids are quick learners and are into the products. I remember the Crazy Eddie store in the Village, at 10PM, their closing time, they had to chase the customers out of the store so the help could go home.

Considering they can’t even keep enough qualified staff at their other locations with normal hours, this should end well. I mean, I see what they are trying to do, and it looks good on paper. But in the real world, not so much. Got to love that boardroom/breakroom disconnect.
