Shure Student Recording Competition Now Open

September 22, 2009

Registration for Shure’s sixth annual “Fantastic Scholastic” student recording competition is running now through Oct. 19. The competition is open to high school and college students. Competing teams from 10 schools will be randomly selected to submit an original piece of music recorded using Shure microphones.A random drawing will determine the 10 competing schools, each of which will receive a standardized “microphone locker” filled with a wide variety of Shure microphones that must be used to complete every recording project submitted.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of industry professionals who will evaluate the recordings based upon their overall fidelity, clarity, sonic balance and creativity in selection and placement of the microphones.

The names of registrants chosen as contestants in the random drawing will be posted on Shure’s Web site on or around Oct. 23. Dedicated mic lockers will then be sent out and must be returned no later than Feb. 1, 2010. Announcement of prize winners will take place on or around April 9, 2010.

“This contest is something we really look forward to each year,” said Shure market development specialist Dave Mendez, the contest coordinator. “In the five years since we started doing it, it’s grown into something bigger than we ever imagined it would. We’re grateful for the enthusiasm of the schools, students and faculty who participate in the contest and for the interest of the judges, many of whom repeat year after year, to review the submissions. It’s a great way for us to support the craft of recording music and we look forward to another successful competition this year.”

The grand-prize-winning school will receive a collection of seven Shure KSM microphones and equipment valued at more than $8,000, as well as $3,000 toward a scholarship fund for the school. Individual team members each receive a KSM microphone.

A runner-up and honorably mentioned school will also be awarded Shure equipment.
