Hoya will shutter a Pentax digital camera factory in Japan and move camera manufacturing to facilities in Vietnam and the Philippines “to improve competitiveness,” Bloomberg reports.
According to the report, Hoya will offer early retirement to 250 of its employees at its factory in Mashiko, Tochigi prefecture.

This is a big blow to Pentax's corporate pride--that factory in
Mashiko was the flagship production facility from the 1980s through
the early part of this decade, producing the highest-priced and
most complex products in Pentax's lineup. They didn't give specific
reasons, but high labor costs are the most likely reason. Closing
the Mashiko factory is a decision the old Pentax management
probably knew needed to be done but didn't want to do--therefore
they left it until Hoya management could come in and make the hard
decision.
