Kodak 50-megapixel Sensor

Who said the megapixel wars are dead? Kodak announced today that it had developed a 50-megapixel CCD sensor. That’s 5-0.

Now, before you cast down your puny 12-megapixel camera in disgust, the Kodak monstrosity won’t be found in any consumer or even advanced amateur d-SLR — the KAF-50100 sensor is even larger than the “full-frame” 35mm-sized sensors found in high-end digital SLRs like Nikon’s D3, and as such is geared toward medium format cameras used by professional photographers.

Volume production of the sensor will begin in the fourth quarter. The sensor will be used in the new Hasselblad H3DII-50 medium format camera.
