Home >> Value Electronics To Hold 9th Annual Flat Panel Competition
Scarsdale, N.Y. – Independent video dealer Value Electronics is holding its Ninth Annual Flat Panel Shootout this week.
The competition compares leading displays before an audience of calibrators, consumers, media and manufacturers reps.
This year’s evaluation models are all 60- to 65-inch premium LED and plasma TVs from Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, LG and Sony, which will be calibrated to Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standards.
Guests will include Kevin Miller from the Image Science Foundation (ISF), British TV reviewer David Mackenzie, and Dr. Larry Weber, credited with developing the plasma display panel.
Value Electronics founder/president Robert Zohn described the competition as “a totally unbiased comparison from the five leading flat-panel TV manufacturers. We buy all the products and run them through the same test patterns, use the same sources and power conditioners for all TVs, and the results are determined by a panel of the top engineers in the country. There is nothing else quite like it.”
Jim Ristow, executive VP of Home Entertainment Source (HES) and ProSource, Zohn’s buying group family, added that the scientific comparison “helps consumers make educated decisions on the best sets for their money. It also shows Value Electronics to be a credible and unbiased retailer, while raising awareness about the very latest video technologies. With the introduction of Ultra HD and OLED, as well as the advancements of LED and PDP technologies, this should be a great year for flat panel displays.”
All test panels will be fed simultaneously through a professional HDMI distribution amp from the same reference Blu-ray player using the same type HDMI cables, and will be powered by a dedicated 20-amp circuit run through a power conditioner.
Panelists will measure and compare the sets’ contrast ratios, peak brightness, black levels, color accuracy, color saturation, motion resolution, 3D performance and energy efficiency, with a Q&A session to be held following each presentation.
The audience will vote on each of the four picture-quality attributes, with the winning panel crowned “King of HDTV.”
The Shootouts will take place at Value Electronics’ new showroom here on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11 at 6 p.m. Limited seating is still available. To register or view live HD streams of the event, visit www.valueelectronics.com. The Shootout will also be archived on the website for future viewing.
