Bellevue, Wash. – T-Mobile USA’s subscriber base grew by 160,000 in the third quarter, reversing a second-quarter decline of 205,000, despite continuing sharp losses in the number of branded postpaid subscribers.
A loss of 492,000 branded-postpaid subscribers was offset by a 365,000 gain in the number of less profitable branded prepaid subscribers and a 287,000 gain in less profitable wholesale (MVNO and M to M) subscribers.
With the gains, the carrier’s subscriber base grew to 33.3 million, but that was still down from the year-ago 33.7 million.
Despite the subscriber gains, total revenues fell 6.4 percent to $4.9 billion from the year-ago period following declines in the first and second quarters.
The carrier also posted its first quarterly operating loss and net loss for the year, but the losses were the result of a one-time $8.1 billion goodwill impairment charge triggered by the planned merger of MetroPCS and T-Mobile. Without the charge, the company would have posted operating and net income, though both metrics would have been lower compared with the year-ago period.
Net and operating income were up in the first quarter and down in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, operating losses came to $7.6 billion, but without the impairment charge, the company would have posted operating income of $534 million, down from the year-ago $663 million.
The third-quarter net loss came to $7.81 billion but, without the impairment charge, the company would have posted net income of $324 million, down from the year-ago $332 million.
