Home >> Sony Readies Dual-SIM Smartphone For U.S.
San Diego – Sony Mobile Communications is bringing its first dual-SIM cellphone to the U.S. market with the launch of the Xperia Tipo Dual.
The dual-SIM Tipo Dual and its single-SIM counterpart, the Xperia Tipo, are 3G Android 4.0 smartphones available as unlocked unsubsidized models.
The Xperia Tipo is already available at Store.Sony.com at a suggested $179 in four colors. The $189 Xperia Tipo Dual is available for pre-order at Store.Sony.com and will also be available in select Sony retail stores at a date that wasn’t specified.
Newegg and other online retailers will also carry both phones, but Sony did not specify an availability date through those channels, either.
The dual-SIM Tipo Dual is targeted to users who want a phone with two phone numbers, one number for personal use and the other for business use, Sony said. International travelers can also use the dual-SIM phone to switch from a U.S. carrier’s service to a foreign carrier’s service to eliminate international roaming charges when placing local calls from within a foreign country.
To switch between SIM cards, users press a button on the Dual Tipo. Users can also switch SIMs automatically by programming the phone to use each SIM card at specific times of the day. Each SIM card can also be programmed with different ringtones and notifications, Sony said.
Both phones feature 800MHz CPU, 3.2-inch 320 by 480 touchscreen, 2.9GB embedded memory, 512MB RAM, 32GB MicroSD card slot, 3.2-megapixel camera, VGA video recording, Wi-Fi hot spot and Bluetooth.
The phone’s 3G technologies are W-CDMA and HSDPA 7.2Mbps in the U.S 850/1900MHz bands and foreign 2100MHz bands. The phones also operate in GSM/EDGE mode in the two U.S. bands and in foreign 900/1800MHz bands.
Earlier this week, Sony announced the U.S. launch of another unlocked smartphone, the ruggedized Xperia acro S Android 4.0 smartphone at a suggested $599.
