Shanghai, China — Sony Mobile unveiled a premium Android LTE smartphone said to offer the world’s largest FullHD display at 6.4 inches.
With a chassis depth of only 0.26 inches (6.5mm), it’s said to be slimmer than any other phone with FullHD display.
The water- and dust-resistant Xperia Z Ultra, unveiled here at Mobile Asia Expo, also features what the company called the world’s fastest smartphone processor, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core CPU. It’s also the first Xperia-series smartphone with the ability to use a capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter of more than 1mm.
The company also unveiled its next-generation smart watch, the SmartWatch 2 SW2, which is said to be the world’s first smart watch with NFC connectivity for one-touch pairing to an Android phone. It also adds higher resolution display, better visibility in sunlight, longer battery life, new UI and stand-alone watch functionality.
The Xperia Z Ultra with Android 4.2 OS will launch globally in the third quarter, but the timing of U.S. availability wasn’t announced. The smart watch ships worldwide in September.
The cellphone’s LTE bands weren’t disclosed, but its HSPA + bands include U.S. and foreign bands, including the U.S. 850/1900MHz bands.
The phone, billed as the first water-resistant FullHD phone, weighs 7.5 ounces and features tempered-glass front and back, solid-metal frame, and the OmniBalance design used in the Xperia Z and Tablet Z.
The Z Ultra will be available in black, white or purple.
It’s Sony’s first smartphone with the company’s FullHD Triluminos Display to create a wider palette of natural colors, the company said.
The NFC-equipped SmartWatch 2 is water-resistant and dust-resistant and comes with touchscreen display that’s readable in sunlight. With the watch, users can control phone functions and SmartWatch apps. Users can manage phone calls by touching the display, take photos using a camera app, control presentations remotely, check a navigation route with a quick glance, read previously downloaded emails when not connected to the phone, track fitness activities, view and make social-media updates, and select phone-stored songs for playback.
Sony offers more than 200 apps for its smart watches.
