Santa Clara, Calif. — NPD DisplaySearch is forecasting continued high prices and low adoption of AMOLED TVs due to low manufacturing yields.
DisplaySearch’s Tadashi Uno, materials and components market research director, said AMOLED panel manufacturing costs are seven times higher than for LCD panels. The estimated cost of producing a 55-inch panel is $2,543; however, Uno predicted that prices will fall.
“As yields improve, the cost is expected to fall significantly over the next two years, but will remain much higher than equivalent LCD panels,” he said.
Uno expects production costs to fall by 36 percent from 2013 to 2014. While this will have some impact, LCD panels will still be five times cheaper.
