San Diego — Nokia’s next Lumia smartphone for the U.S. market will be the Lumia 928 for the Verizon network, but Nokia has revealed little about the Windows Phone 8 device other than to say it will deliver better low-light camera performance than the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III.
The device will likely be unveiled officially at a May 14 Nokia event in London and appear at the CTIA convention on May 21-23.
The device appears in a Vanity Fair ad that includes the Verizon logo. It also appears on the Nokia website with a video comparing the phone’s low-light camera performance to that of the iPhone 5 and S III. The website highlights the phone’s 8.7-megapixel camera/camcorder with Carl Zeiss optics and optical image stabilization.
An image of a billboard on a blog site shows the same phone, the Verizon logo, the words Nokia Lumia 928 and the tagline “the best low-light smartphone camera.”
The U.S. launch will follow the launch of another new Nokia Lumia phone, the Lumia 521 for the T-Mobile network. The device, available exclusively on the T-Mobile network, was introduced April 27 on HSN at $149 with bundled car charger and screen protector. It is scheduled for May 11 availability at Microsoft retail stores and at Walmart, where the device will be available with the retailer’s exclusive T-Mobile no-contract $30/month unlimited-web and unlimited-text plan.
The Lumia 521 is promoted as a smartphone with high-end features at an affordable price. Specs include a 4-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and 720p HD video capture, the Nokia Music app, and embedded navigation maps for driving and mass transit. The phone lacks 4G LTE but features HSPA+21, billed as 4G by T-Mobile.
The Lumia 521 also features 8GB of embedded storage and a 64GB MicroSD card slot.
