Basking Ridge, N.J. – Verizon Wireless is tapping opposite ends of the smartphone market with the launch of LG’s first “phablet,” priced at $199, and a free Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy Stellar.
Both Android 4.0 phones feature 4G LTE and will be available Sept. 6.
The LG phone/tablet was launched early this year by LG at the Mobile World Congress as the Optimus Vu, which is also the brand’s first phone with a stylus for writing and drawing on a screen. The Samsung phone, targeted to first-time smartphone users, is free after $50 mail-in rebate, which comes in the form of a debit card. Both phones are said to be enterprise-ready.
LG’s phablet features a 5-inch 4:3 HD IPS display, 1GB RAM, 650-nit display for legibility in direct sunlight, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, ability to write and draw on documents via a stylus, 32GB of internal memory, and a 2,080mAh battery. The display’s 4:3 aspect ratio is said to be optimized for easy viewing and note taking.
Other Vu features include 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, 1.3-megapixel front camera, 1080p 30 fps video capture, 1,024 by 768 display, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, stereo Bluetooth 3.0+HS, mobile hotspot capability to share a 4G connection with up to 10 Wi-Fi devices, and LG’s DLNA-based SmartShare to share media with other DLNA devices.
With the included Rubberdium pen or with a finger, users can add handwritten notes to pictures, maps and websites for sharing through text messages, social media, email and the like. Customers can also pick different colors and pen types with which to write and draw.

Other features include Polaris Office app to view, create, edit and share documents, spreadsheets and presentations. The Intuition also features the LG Tag+ app and two reprogrammable NFC (Near Field Communications) stickers that can be used to create and switch between different phone modes with a single tap. Customizable modes include car mode, office mode, and sleep mode. Settings such as Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and the like be turned on or off by tapping the back of the phone to an LG Tag+ sticker.
Business-ready features include enterprise-grade security, corporate data encryption, secure VPN, remote wipe and the like.
The Intuition will be available at VerizonWireless.com starting Sept. 6 and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and indirect retailers beginning Sept. 10.
For first-time smartphone users, Verizon is launching the free Samsung Galaxy Stellar. It lets users choose between Starter mode and Standard mode. Starter mode delivers a simpler home screen display with preset widgets such as Favorite Apps, Favorite Contacts and Favorite Settings for quick access to frequently used apps and settings. Starter mode also features a quick dialer icon to let users make phone calls directly from the home screen. Standard mode provides a more traditional Android user interface. It comes with Samsung Media Hub app to download TV and film content for rent or purchase.
For business, the phone features on-device AES 256-bit encryption, enhanced support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and support for VPN and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.
Stellar features include 4-inch 800 by 480 WVGA display, 1.2 GHz dual-core GHz Snapdragon processor, front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chats, 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, and Backup Assistant Plus, a media-management and online-storage service designed to help users store and access media content such as music, videos, pictures, documents and contacts. Other features include 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and MicroSD card slot with support for up to 32GB.
The Stellar will be available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, at VerizonWireless.com and indirect retailers starting Sept. 6 for free after a $50 mail-in rebate. The rebate comes in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted.
