Seoul, South Korea — LG Electronics (LG) said it will offer next year a curved 105-inch Ultra HD LCD TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio.
The new super widescreen set, model 105UB9, was pre-announced by the parent company ahead of its planned unveiling at International CES in Las Vegas Jan. 7-10.
LG is calling the set -- “officially the largest curved TV ever made.”
The 105UB9’s screen is said to be cinematically proportioned to CinemaScope dimensions and will eliminate the need for black bars at the top of bottom of the frame when viewing such material.
The extra width also enables displaying text and data information on the side of the screen without blocking any of ongoing action.
Screen resolution exceeds 11 million pixels (5120-by-2160).
LG said new technology was developed to resolve a number of issues arising from curving such a large screen, such as maintaining structural integrity and delivering uniform color and brightness.
LG said that until now, OLED panels were preferred for curved displays due to their ability to generate their own light.
The company’s LG Display unit overcame the challenge of uneven backlighting by refining its Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology to prevent color leakage and to ensure a superior viewing experience from virtually any angle.
“LG Display has kept its dominant position in the display market with innovative and differentiated technologies,” stated Yong-kee Hwang, LG Display’s TV Business unit head and senior VP. “With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers.”
“We’re proud to reveal our 105-inch Curved Ultra HD TV at the world’s largest technology event,” said In-kyu Lee, LG Home Entertainment TV division head and VP, said: “Claiming the world’s first and the world’s largest titles, LG’s 105UB9 employs cutting-edge technology to provide a truly unique viewing experience. We will continue to drive the next generation TV market and demonstrate that with LG, it’s all possible.”
