Emeryville, Calif. — LeapFrog announced its newest kids tablet, the company’s first with built-in Wi-Fi.
The LeapPad Ultra features a 7-inch touchscreen with 1,024 by 600 resolution, 800MHz processor, 8GB of internal storage, built-in Wi-Fi and parental controls. It has a 2-megapixel front and back camera and a video recorder that can take 480p video. Unlike the previous-generation LeapPad2, the MP3 player on the Ultra is built in. It also has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery for the first time.
The LeapPad Ultra will use a proprietary new web browser — called the LeapSearch powered by Zui — that will enables young users to search LeapFrog-approved sites on the web. Two tablets can also be connected locally for peer-to-peer play, a first for a LeapPad.
The Ultra, which will have a $149 suggested retail, will be able to make use of LeapFrog’s content library, which features more than 800 apps, videos, games, e-books and music. Game cartridges will carry $24.99 suggested retails, with apps priced at $5.00 and more.
