Santa Clara, Calif. — Intel will begin to phase out production of its branded desktop motherboards, effective after the introduction of its next-generation Haswell processor by 2013.
The company announced the decision in an email to the press.
The move is expected to take place over the next three years as Intel focuses on the Ultrabook, smartphone and tablet side of the computing business, the company said. The company said it will continue to support its long line of branded processors and motherboards.
As the desktop business winds down, the company will take the human and technical talent dedicated to that business and spread it among its other processor projects.
While desktop PC sales have fallen over the years, the category is not expected to disappear. AMD and Asus can step in and supply the desktop market with motherboards.
