New York — Screen Media Ventures this week launched FrightPix, an ad-supported free streaming-movie app specializing in horror films that will be offered through an app on the Roku smart-TV platform.
The company, which also produces a similar less-genre-specific streaming service called Popcornflix, launched FrightPix with more than 100 feature-length horror films to start and plans to add 30 additional films each month.
Both Popcornflix and FrightPix are ad-supported and free to the viewer. The new channel offers content ranging from creature freatures to slashers, splatter films, zombie films, etc. Examples of titles include “Inkubus” (2011) and “Howling V” (1989).
The company also announced the launch of a new horror label, called Screen Media Darkside, to help acquire content for the service.
“We’re very excited to launch our second digital movie platform,” said Gary Delfiner, president of Screen Media Digital, a division of Screen Media Ventures, which is the parent of Popcornflix and FrightPix. “The horror genre is a great niche with many devoted fans, and we expect the channel to be extremely popular.”
Screen Media Films, another division of Screen Media Ventures, created the Screen Media Darkside label. It will focus on the development, production and worldwide acquisition of new genre films.
Film acquisitions to date include the home-invasion slasher film “Home Sweet Home” and the high-school-set creepy thriller “The Expelled.”
“We are excited to launch a branded line of horror titles in this still quite profitable genre,” said Suzanne Blech, Screen Media Films president. “The brand will focus on connecting with fans by releasing unique and quality genre films.”
The FrightPix Roku app was developed by Float Left Interactive.
