ComScore: Apple Gains U.S. Ground In Smartphone Brand, OS Share

Reston, Va. – Apple and Samsung gained share at equal rates among U.S. smartphone users at the end of 2013, but Apple’s share grew a bit faster than Samsung’s on a year-over-year basis, ComScore found in its latest consumer survey.

As a result, Apple remained tops in smartphone share among users at the end of the year, ComScore said.

The company’s survey also found that the Android smartphone OS remained dominant even though its share fell slightly on a sequential basis and by almost 2 percentage points on a year-over-year basis in the quarter ending December 2013.

Apple’s iOS gained ground on a sequential basis and on a year-over-year basis.

In surveying consumers ages 13 and older, ComScore found that in the fourth quarter, Apple and Samsung increased their share on a sequential basis by 1.2 percentage points each, enabling Apple to retain its top spot with a 41.8 percent share compared with Samsung’s 26.1 percent. Motorola dropped 0.1 percentage points to 6.7 percent while LG’s share stayed flat at 6.6 percent. HTC’s share fell 1.4 percentage points to 5.7 percent.

On a year-over-year basis, Apple’s share growth slightly outpaced Samsung’s. Apple share rose 5.5 percentage points to 41.8 percent while Samsung’s share rose 5.1 percentage points to 26.1 percent. Motorola’s share fell 2.4 percentage points to 6.7 percent, LG’s share rose 0.5 percentage points to 6.6 percent, and HTC’s share fell 4.5 percentage points to 5.7 percent.

In surveying smartphone users about their OSs, ComScore found that Android’s share fell 0.3 percentage points on a sequential basis to 51.1 percent while iOS share rose 1.2 percentage points to 41.8 percent. The BlackBerry, Microsoft and Symbian OSs lost share by a respective 0.4, 0.2 and 0.1 percentage points.

On a year-over-year basis, the iOS share rose 5.5 percentage points to 41.8 percent while Android share fell 1.9 percentage points to 51.5 percent. BlackBerry share fell 3 percentage points to 3.4 percent.

In other findings, ComScore said 156 million people ages 13 and older owned smartphones during the three-month period, up 3.2 percent from the previous three-month period and up 23.9 percent from the year-ago 125.9 million.

A total of 65.2 percent of cellphone users were using a smartphone at the end of 2013, up 11.2 percentage points from the year-ago 54 percent.
