A/V Receivers More Than $699: Harman International Harman Kardon AVR 3700

With 7×125-watt output Harman Kardon’s AVR3700 connects to audio sources that were not even imagined when the company shipped its first hi-fi receiver in 1954.
It’s equipped with Apple AirPlay to stream music via embedded Wi-Fi from iPhones, iPads, and iTunes-equipped PCs and Macs; vTuner Internet radio to play thousands of Internet radio stations; and DLNA 1.5 certification to stream audio from Wi-Fi-connected devices and audio and video via an Ethernet connection.
While Harman Kardon’s original receiver brought the concert experience home, the AVR 3700 also brings home the movie theater experience. In the ’50s, home theater was as foreign a concept as flying to the moon, but the new model embraces home theater and, in fact, was designed with extra attention devoted to video processing and UltraHD 4k by 2K passthrough and up-scaling, which delivers the highest quality Ultra HD signal to new Ultra HD displays from connected video sources.
“Audio companies do not typically have the expertise or pay enough attention to delivering a great video experience,” said Christopher M. Dragon, Harman International’s senior director of marketing. “Not at all the case with the AVR3700. The video stages are exceptional. Couple great Harman Kardon audio, great video circuitry with a well-thought out feature set, and you have a winner,” he said.
The AVR 3700 features the advanced Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio surround-sound formats and Dolby Pro Logic IIz post processing, which derives a pair of front-height channels for additional audio realism.
Audio realism is also enhanced by Harman Kardon’s EzSet/EQ technology. Proprietary Logic 7 technology creates 5.1- and 7.1-channel soundfields from two-channel sources.
The AVR3700 provides additional connectivity for more entertainment flexibility, including eight 3D-capable HDMI inputs, dual simultaneous HDMI outputs with audio return channel, and front-panel Made For iPod/iPhone/iPad USB port to play back music from USB-connected Apple mobile devices and from USB drives.
The two-zone receiver delivers audio from separate connected sources to up to two zones simultaenously, and it comes with a second remote control so users in a second room can control audio playback. The AVR 3700 also features high-definition graphical menu for setup and navigation, and a full set of preamp outputs allows for use of external power amplifiers.
