Arcam Readies Wireless AirPlay-Equipped DAC

Cambridge, U.K. – Arcam plans April availability of its first app-controlled wireless DAC, which will also be the company’s first AirPlay-equipped product.

The $700 AirDAC adds wireless AirPlay and UPnP streaming to existing stereo and home-theater systems. An iOS app from Arcam for iPhones and iPads operates the DAC, chooses music stored on the iOS device or on an iTunes-equipped computer, and chooses music stored on any UPnP-equipped NAS drive, computer or music server running UPnP server software. Such software includes Songbook Mac, Twonky, AssetUPNP and MediaTomb, the company said.

The DAC also streams music from Android devices equipped with UPnP music apps.

The aluminum-chassis 24-bit/192kHz DAC streams high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz music via UPnP and features two digital audio inputs, analog outputs and an S/PDIF output, which can be used to connect to a reference-quality DAC.

The AirDAC is not Arcam’s first wireless DAC. The company offered a simple wireless DAC a couple of years ago, a spokesman said.

The DAC will be marketed in the U.S. by Southaven, Miss.-based American Audio and Video, which also markets the Canton and Sinclair Audio home audio brands.

Arcam’s iOS app, called SongBook, also controls UPnP streaming for eight other Arcam components that incorporate the company’s network streaming music player. The products consist of six A/V receivers, a preamp processor and a single-chassis music system.

The app has been updated with a new user interface to simplify operation. The app includes control of library search, sort, shuffle and repeat functions.
