Aptina Sensors To Enable Advanced DSCs

San Jose, Calif. – Imaging sensor maker Aptina said it has developed a new 18-megpixel sensor for high-end compact cameras.

The AR 1820HS is a 1.25-micron backside illuminated chip that is said to fit in the 1/2.3-inch mainstream digital still camera optical format.

The company said the sensor will give camera OEMs the ability to produce next-generation cameras with high image quality and fast speeds.

The 18-megapixel resolution can be read out at up to 24 fps. For video, the sensor can captures 14 megapixels at 30 fps, and a binned 8 megapixels at 60 fps.

The oversampled image readout enables superior resolution, noise performance and cleaner overall video, the company said.

In other announcements, Aptina unveiled the AR1011HS, which is a 1-inch optical format sensor designed to for high-quality bridge and mirrorless cameras.

The sensor produces 10-megapixel resolution, has 3.4-micron pixels, and delivers strong low light and bright light images.

For video it will capture 10 megapixels at 60 fps, “broadcast-quality quad-high definition,” oversampled 1080p, and 1080p video at 120 fps.

Both sensors are slated for mass production starting next year.
