Basking Ridge, N.J. - Verizon Wireless acknowledged prepaid-cellular's growth by expanding its selection of smartphones available with prepaid service.

Samsung's Illusion smartphone was the sole smartphone available with a prepaid plan, but the selection now includes the Droid Incredible by HTC, Droid 3 by Motorola, BlackBerry Bold 9930, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, LG Enlighten and others.

Citing Stevenson Company research, Verizon noted that prepaid service accounted for almost one-third of all smartphone purchases by U.S. consumers in 2011.

The smartphones are available with an $80 prepaid plan that includes unlimited talk and text messaging and 1GB of data.
