Thomson To Move 27-Inch CRT Plant

Staff -- TWICE, 6/11/2001

DUNMORE, PA. — Thomson Consumer Electronics said it will close its picture tube manufacturing plant here in August and move operations to Mexico, to be closer to its existing television assembly plant in Mexicali.

The move will force the layoffs of some 1,070 U.S. workers, company officials said.

In a statement explaining the decision, Thomson executives said shifting production of picture tubes, which have been produced in the Scranton, Pa., suburb since 1966, will "improve manufacturing competitiveness and reduce costs."

In recent years, the Dunmore plant produced primarily 27-inch picture tubes that were used for RCA and General Electric TVs, as well as some Zenith sets.
