Charter Cable, Circuit City Ink Modem Deal

Staff -- TWICE, 6/11/2001

ST. LOUIS — Charter Communications has reached a deal with Circuit City to display, demonstrate and sell broadband cable modem service and eventually digital cable TV equipment and service through 63 stores in Charter cable territories.

Starting in July, Circuit City customers will be able to test Charter Pipeline and Charter@Home high-speed Internet service, purchase self-install cable modems and kits, and order broadband service.

In addition, consumers will be able to view and order Charter Digital Cable service and check out other advanced digital services.

Later in the year, Circuit City is expected to take on Charter's digital cable TV services.

That move would put Charter Cable and DirecTV in head to head competition in select showrooms of one of DirecTV's largest retail partners.

Charter is in discussions with other major consumer-electronics retailers about retailing its services, the company said, and has worked with CompUSA in the past.
