RIM Sues Glenayre: Who Is Next?

WATERLOO, ONTARIO — Research In Motion won a patent for its Blackberry technology and sued Glenayre for violating the patent. RIM hasn't said whether it will sue other companies whose products or services redirect a user's corporate or ISP e-mail to a wireless device.

"Other companies will certainly need to take this patent into account when designing and marketing products for this market," said Mark Guibert, brand management VP.

RIM, he said, is "interested in licensing the technology, but we're looking for substantial companies that will maintain high quality standards for the benefit of the whole market."

The method described by the patent "can be used with a variety of different host systems and devices" to enable a wireless device to share an e-mail address with a PC, "regardless of whether a specific application is tied to a corporate email account or an ISP-based account."

Ericsson, Tomb Raider Tie

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — More than 37,000 retail outlets have signed up to participate in an Ericsson promotional tie-in with the movie Tomb Raider from May 15-June 30.

Ericsson has launched a $5 million national media campaign with TV commercials, magazine ads, and web ads.

The TV ads, tagged to carriers such as Cingular and AT&T, feature movie clips showing Angelina Jolie, starring as archaeologist Lara Croft, using Ericsson concept products and current products to escape from dangerous situations.

At retail outlets, a scratch-and-win game offers prizes, including Land Rovers, trips to Southeast Asia, portable DVD players, and outdoor/adventure gear.
