Sony Adds Style To DVD Players

Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 3/12/2001

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -Sony unveiled a number of new DVD players including the "stylish" DVP-F21 ($300 street), which the company designed to be played in any of three positions: vertically or horizontally on shelves or set-tops, or hung from a wall.

Also unveiled were two DVD Dream Systems, including the single-disc DAV-S500 ($600 street) and the five-disc DAV-C700 ($800), both of which are said to add increased power, built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and Super Audio CD multichannel audio playback. Both ship to dealers in July.

In other video product announcements, Sony said its first ATSC/ DirecTV HD set-top ($799 without dish) ships this month. However, that set-top will not include an i.LINK digital connection for use with the new XBR HDTV sets.

Sony also said it will ship its previously announced UltimateTV/ DirecTV personal video recorder with dual-DirecTV tuning and wireless keyboard this month at a $449 suggested retail price. It will join the integrated TiVo/DirecTV set-top that is already available at $399.

In related announcements, Sony Electronics Broadcast and Professional Co. said it will unveil the VPL-FX50 LCD video projector at the Presentations 2001 Expo in Atlanta. The lightweight unit features a futuristic-looking, semi-round shape with center-mounted lens.

Intended for large-screen projection purposes with its 3,500 ANSI lumens and 250-watt lamp, the three-panel 1.3-inch LCD projector produces XGA (1,024 x 768) resolution.
