Palm Bows Sprint Treo 800w

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 7/14/2008 10:00:00 AM

Sunnyvale, Calif. — Palm announced a new EV-DO Rev. A smartphone, the Treo 800w, that offers GPS, push email and Wi-Fi out of the box.

The device is Sprint’s first smartphone to ship with EV-DO Rev A. Aimed at business users, the 800w also allows a direct connection to Microsoft Exchange Server for up-to-data email, contacts and calendar changes.

The new Treo supports live TV or video on demand; instant messaging through Yahoo! Messenger, AOL’s AIM and MSN Messenger; and offers built-in Internet Explorer Mobile.

For navigation, it offers point-to-point directions, maps and point-of-interest searches. It also supports Sprint Navigation, the turn-by-turn navigation service that provides an interface similar to that of a standard portable GPS device.

The 800w uses 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, runs Windows Mobil 6.1 Professional and has a full QWERTY keyboard. It is available today through Sprint stores, online through Sprint and Palm and through Sprint B2B sales operations at $249 after discounts and rebates with a two-year contract.

Sprint said most of its Mobile Broadband Network, reaching more than 246 million people in 16,022 cities, supports EV-DO Rev. A.
