Former Target Chairman Kenneth Macke Dies

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 7/1/2008 9:29:00 AM

Napa, Calif. — Kenneth Macke, a former chairman/CEO of Target and its one-time corporate parent Dayton Hudson, died this past weekend at age 69, The New York Times reported today.

Macke joined the Minneapolis-based retail group directly from college as a sales trainee in 1961. He was named to the top spot at Target in 1976 when the chain was still a regional discounter with 49 stores.

By 1983 he was promoted to chief executive of Dayton Hudson, which also operated the Marshall Field, Mervyn’s and Dayton Hudson department store chains.

Macke retired from the company in 1994 but continued to serve on several corporate boards including General Mills and Pillsbury, and mentored small, start-up retailers, The Times reported.
